چکیده

The Earth is a magnet. Its dipole character from e results massive currents within the molten portion of its core. These currents, presumably by gravitational in driven i energy, induce, the manner of a self-sustaining dynamo, a global dipolar magnetic field with t a magnitude of rouehly g 0.7 gauss at the gne ti poles. Although the ancient Chinese were familiar with the polar alignment of magnetized needles, geomagnetism became science with the publication in 1600 of HilHam Gilbert's classic exposition De Magnete, Magneticisque Corporibus Et De Magno Magnete Tellure: Physiologia Nova, Plurimis ~ Argumentis ~ Experimentis Demonstrata. Gilbert's predecessor, Peter Peregrinus de Maricourt in his Epistola de li

Bacterial Cell Biology: Managing Magnetosomes

Sensing of magnetic fields by living organisms -- magnetosensing -- is best understood in magnetotactic bacteria. Recently work has provided new insight into the biogenesis of bacterial magnetosomes, and links these organelles to a newly recognized prokaryotic cytoskeletal filament which organizes magnetosomes into a sensory structure capable of aligning cells with the geomagnetic field.

An improved method for geological boundary detection of potential field anomalies

Potential field methods such as gravity and magnetic methods are among the most applied geophysical methods in mineral exploration. A high-resolution technique is developed to image geologic boundaries such as contacts and faults. Potential field derivatives are the basis of many interpretation techniques. In boundary detection, the analytic signal quantity is d...

Can the tardigrade Hypsibius dujardini survive in the absence of the geomagnetic field?

Earth's geomagnetic field has undergone critical changes in the past. Studies on the influence of the magnetic field on Earth's organisms are crucial for the understanding of evolution of life on Earth and astrobiological considerations. Numerous studies conducted both on plants and animals confirmed the significant influence of the geomagnetic field on the metabolism of living organisms. Water...

Geomagnetic Field Eect over Azimuth Anisotropy of Cosmic Rays via Study of Primary Particles

Geomagnetic field is a one of the candidates for creation of anisotropy in azimuth distribution of extensive air showers over the entered cosmic rays to the atmosphere. Here we present the question: Is there any azimuth anisotropy flux in the upper level of the atmosphere due to the geomagnetic field over the entered cosmic-rays? The obtained answer is: yes. This investigation showed an agreeme...

Magnetic polarity fractions in magnetotactic bacterial populations near the geomagnetic equator.

The relative numbers of North-seeking and South-seeking polarity types in natural populations of magnetotactic bacteria were determined at sites on the coast of Brazil. These sites were South of the geomagnetic equator and had upward geomagnetic inclinations of 1-12 degrees . For upward inclinations >6 degrees , South-seeking cells predominated over North-seeking cells by more than a factor of ...
